The Geary Tournament boasts two distinctive customs that have persisted since its inception: the blind draw and challenge matches.
The blind draw involves randomly selecting the names of competitors from each weight class, traditionally from a hat, but now using a pill bottle to assign numbers for bracket placement.
This method doesn’t consider rankings, leading to unexpected and exciting first or second-round matchups, sometimes even pitting state champions against each other early on.
This unpredictability generates keen excitement among both athletes and spectators. Additionally, after the final medal matches, the second-place wrestler must defend his position if he hasn’t faced the third-place finisher earlier in the tournament.
For over 78 years, these traditions have ensured that a true champion in each of the 14 weight classes is honored annually.
This year’s tournament boasts the same tradition of ultra tough wrestlers and teams. A total of 180+ ranked wrestler across five states will be battling at Geary. Let’s dive into it:
