Preparation and Triumph: Oklahoma Girls Wrestlers Shine at Fall Brawl Tournament

Oklahoma girls made the trek to Kansas City, Mo. to get some competition in before a couple of big tournaments at the end of the month.

Staley High School hosted the annual Fall Brawl Folkstyle wrestling tournament last Sunday for high school girls, which featured wrestlers from the Midwest and Rocky Mountain areas.

Some wrestlers were preparing for the Super 32 Challenge. Others were gearing up for the Preseason Nationals Tournament. 

There were even a few who wanted to get in work so they could prepare to compete in both of those large tournaments. Some sprinkled in just get a little bit of work before the high school season.

The Fall Brawl Tournament gave competitors a chance to face off against some opponents they may have not faced before. In the high school girls class, there were 14 weight classes. Owrestle.com breaks down the results of the top Oklahoma finishers, who finished at least in sixth place or better, in each weight class.

105: Kyrain Perez of Oklahoma City took fourth place after finishing 2-2 on the day. She fell to Jaidyn Alvarado of Kansas by pin in the third-place match. In her wins, she got a pinfall victory and a 4-2 decision.

110: Mariah Robbins of Moore ended the day with a 4-2 record in the tournament. She finished up with a pin in 1:02 against Missouri’s Paige Tihen in the fifth-place match.

115: Oklahoma City’s Kyrstan Perez took fourth place after going 3-2 which included a 7-4 defeat to Carrigan Dellinger of Kansas in the consolation championship match.

120: Cashlie Bowman of Weatherford lost her first match by pin but went on to take her four matches including a 2-0 victory over Kansas’ Megan Vasquez in the third-place match.

125: Bixby’s Brissa Bernal won her first three matches, including an 8-0 victory in the semifinals against Camille Schult of Iowa, but she fell in the championship match against Angelina Vargas of Missouri by a first-period pin.

“This was a really good experience,” Bernal said. “I have a lot of  stuff to work on when I get back home.”

130: Blanchard’s Lynn Horn dominated all three of her matches, winning by a 12-0 major decision in the semifinals against Alexis Schmotzer and she pinned Nebraska’s Alexis Pehrson in the first period of the championship match to take first place.

135: Tulsa’s Madison Pagonis fell in her first match, but won two in a row in the consolation bracket to set up a third-place match of Jacinda Espinosa of Missouri. She fell in that one by pin in the second period.

140: Edmond’s Aubrey Brown fell to eventual champion Annalise Obermark in the quarterfinals by pin but rebounded to get three pins in the consolation bracket, one of which included a pin in 1:47 against Camryn Mather of Kansas in the third-place bout.

145: El Reno’s Kaylee Davis had little trouble dispatching her competition. In her round-robin bracket she pinned all her opponents in 1:05 or less to take first place.

“I feel I wrestled really good,” Davis said. “I wrestled some tough opponents and I was able to work on some things like taking shots again.”

155: El Reno’s Hannah Koen dominated her bracket as she won three matches by pin and one by medical forfeit. In the championship match, she pinned Ada’s Makenna Howell in 1:19 to earn her spot at the top of the podium.

“I felt like I wrestled really good,” Koen said. “I had a lot of stamina and I felt like I was able to last the whole match.”
