The 2024 All-State Duals took place Wednesday night in the new and very impressive Broken Arrow Event Center with the Large West winning 37-30 and the Small East winning by a 34-21 score.

In the All-State events, everyone, of course, would like to end their high school career with a W, but the honor of being selected and participating in the All-State games is what it is all about. Catoosa’s Tucker Collinsworth may have summed it up best when he stated “I was very excited to hear that I made All-State and get to represent Catoosa one last time and to wrestle with all my buddies on the east side that I grew up with.  It is the best feeling I could have for an ending to my high school career.  I didn’t overthink it, I just wanted to come in and enjoy myself and have fun one more time.”

In the large school dual, the East team jumped to a 24-4 lead, but the West won six in a row, getting falls from Kooper Kelly, Evan Johnson, Deontre Buttram, Liam Daniels and Sam Pritz and a win by Jack Anglley to put the dual away.

At 120 lbs., Piedmont’s 2X state champion and 4X finalist Cash Donnell picked up the first points for the Large West with a 9-1 major decision win over Ponca City’s Jimmy Swenson.  The West didn’t win again until 150 lbs., when Duncan’s Kooper Kelly started the comeback with a fall in 2:22 over Coweta’s Brock Roberts.  Norman North’s Evan Johnson then recorded the quickest fall of the night in boy’s action with a 0:29 fall over Josh Gesell from Grove.

Elgin’s Jack Anglley kept the comeback alive, earning an escape with 17 seconds left to break a 3-3 tie, and pick up the win over Brody Ensten (Sand Springs).  Next, Del City state champions Deontre Buttram and Liam Daniels recorded back-to-back falls to put the West in the lead for the first time all night.  Buttram pinned Glenpool’s Trent Cole in 4:50 and Daniels led 15-4 before pinning Claremore’s Cameron Braswell in 3:15.  Following the win Daniels stated “I knew there were a lot of good wrestlers and 190 lbs. is a tough weight class, so it felt good to be selected to All-State team and it was great to finish with a win.”

Mustang’s Sam Pritz put the dual out of reach and secured the win for the West team with a fall in 1:23 over Ty Schlessman from Grove.

Cavin Peper (Sapulpa) got the East Team on the board first, winning the opening match by tech fall over Elijah Otiz (Altus).  Following Donnell’s win in the second match, Union’s Dariuz Black started a four-match win streak for the East, taking a 14-5 major decision.  Black surrendered the first takedown to fall behind, but came back with four takedowns, including two in the 3rd period to pick up the win (takedowns were worth 3 points).

Broken Arrow Evan Rodriguez led 7-0 before pinning Mustang’s Javin Douglas in 2:39.  2X state champion and 4X finalist, J.J. McComas (Stillwater) made it three wins in a row for the East with a 6-1 win over Carl Albert 3X finalist and 4X placer Kasen Miller.  Broken Arrow’s Kadence Roop put the East up 24-4 with a fall in 2:41 over Enid’s Steven Brooks.

Following the six match win streak by the West that put the dual out of reach, state runner-up Mason Harris (Sand Springs) ended the night with a fall in 1:23 over Brian Kordostanchi (Putnam City West) to make the final score Large West – 37, Large East – 30.

Coach for the Large School East Team was Andrew McCune from Shawnee with Oscar Loza Hoyos from OKC U.S. Grant coaching the West Team.

In the Small schools dual, Harrah’s Liam Russell got the West on the board first with an 8-2 win over Skiatook’s Cole Smith.  Blackwell state champion Jaxson Brown picked up the first win for East, fighting off serious takedown attempts at the end of the 2nd and 3rd period to post a 3-2 win over Tuttle’s Garrett Spurlock.

In one of the most entertaining matches of the night, Marlow state champion Marcus Williams won by an 11-7 score over Vinita’s 2023 state champion and 4X state placer Zane Donley.  Williams almost pinned Donley to start the match, but Donley fought off his back and at the end of the match came close to throwing Williams to his back, but Williams fought it off to secure the win….
