The Northern Oklahoma College of Tonkawa (NOC) Lady Mavericks hit the road and competed in their first tournament ever on Friday, November 1 at the Falcon Open, hosted by Friends University in Witichita, Kansas. In a season that will be filled with firsts, the Lady Mavs wrestlers will be looking to lay a foundation for seasons to come this year. While the first ever tournament placer will have to wait, the Lady Mavs had a successful tournament and showed that they are ready to make some noise in their inaugural National Junior College Athletics Association wrestling season.
NOC had two wrestlers compete in the 103 pound weight class. Mia Cabrera lost a tight decision in her first match of the day, but bounced back to pick up a tech fall victory in her first consolation match. Cabrera lost her following match and finished her day 1-2. Leila Rosas got a very unfortunate bracket draw for this tournament. She went 0-2 on the day, but competed well against Oklahoma City University’s returning NAIA national tournament qualifier, Sofia Abramson, and Carl Albert State College’s returning NJCAA national champion, Calli Connally. While Rosas is surely not looking for excuses, those are undeniably two very tough wrestlers to see on a bracket.
Fresh off scoring NOC’s first ever pinfall and victory on Thursday night, Addison Polk was back on the mat, representing the Lady Mavs in the 110 pound weight class. Polk got her tournament started off in dramatic fashion, picking up a tech fall victory in her opening match and following it up with a pinfall in her second match.
