Estimating How Much Value David Taylor Added to Oklahoma State Wrestling

Earlier this week we noted Oklahoma State set a record average in attendance this season. With some of those numbers, I thought it would be interesting to look at how that impacts the actual finances at OSU.

In some ways, this look is irrelevant when compared to the past season. Most who have followed know donors stepped in to support David Taylor’s hire. The specific amount they have contributed is unknown, so we can’t look and say “David Taylor is paid x more than John Smith, does he bring in that many more fans to cover the difference?”. I mean, we can, and that’s sort of what we’re going to do here. But we must acknowledge that there are several other variables that impact this discussion

Looking directly at raw attendance, Oklahoma State had 52,839 total attendees in the 2023-24 season. They had 53,178 this season. A difference of 339 more attendees. With most general attendance tickets costing $10, OSU likely made about $3,390 more in ticket revenue this season than they did last year.

But that doesn’t quite tell the whole story. Oklahoma State had two fewer home duals this season compared to last year. The season average for attendance this year was 7,597. If OSU had two more duals this season with 7,597 attendees per dual, that’s 15,194 total. That combined with the 339 is a total of 15,533. Assuming on the low end that they are all general admission tickets at $10 per ticket, that’s $155,330 additional dollars in revenue.

Looking a little bit deeper at some of the changing variables from last season, OSU didn’t host OU or Iowa this year. If you view those as the hypothetical two additional duals, Bedlam last season had an attendance of 9,912 and Iowa had 13,721. If you combine those with the additional 339 this season, the likely most accurate look at Taylor’s impact was an addition of 23,972 attendees. Some of those may be premium seats with costs more than the $10 general admission. But for easy rounding, we’re going to assume they are all $10 ticket. That’s an addition of $239,720 in revenue.

Again, there are numerous other variables and hypotheticals to account for in this equation. But one could argue that David Taylor covered some of his additional costs with the fans he helped bring in this season.
