A talented group of Class 5A wrestlers are looking forward to the season as an impressive 11 2021 state champions return to the mat this year. In addition to the 11 champions, there are 10 returning 2nd place medalists and 16 other state placers.
Collinsville leads the way with five returning state champions. Senior Cameron Steed looks to join the exclusive group of four-time state champions as he enters the season with a 104-6 record. Canon Acklin took the first step in his quest to be four-time champ as he went 21-1 in winning a state title at 106 last year. Junior Clay Gates placed 3rd in 2020 before winning the 113 lb. title in 2021. Junior Cole Brooks went 19-1 in winning the 126 lb. state title last year. Brooks enters the season ranked 17th in the nation. Senior Drake Acklin was a runner-up in 2020 before claiming the 145 lb. title last year. Acklin has a career record of 70-10.
Carl Albert’s Grant Gober was a state runner-up as freshman before winning the 120 lb. title as a sophomore. Gober enters his junior year with a 56-13 career record. Durant’s Cory Hicks steadily moved up the podium with a 3rd place finish in 2019, 2nd place finish in 2020, before winning it all in 2021. Hicks will join the 100-victory club early this season as he enters the year with a 98-9 record. Like Hicks, Garrett Wells of Glenpool moved up the podium each year, placing 4th in 2019, 2nd in 2020 before claiming the 170 lb. title in 2021. Claremore’s B.K. Seago went 23-2 in winning the 182 lb. title last year. Rylan Hitt from Elgin was a state qualifier in 2019, placed 3rd in 2020 and then went 26-2 to win the state title in 2021.
Glenpool’s Mike Edwards and Caleb Phillips from Coweta are both three-time state medalists that will be looking to win the gold medal in their senior seasons. Edwards has finishes of 3-3-2 with a career record of 100-27. Phillips has state finishes of 4-2-2 and has a career record of 94-27.
