For State Tournament week, thought it would be interesting to look at some different records and a good place to start was with the students that excelled in the classroom and on the mat.
The OSSAA first recognized the Wrestling Academic State Champions in 1990. According to the OSSAA Manual, guidelines for selecting the state champion team are:
- Grades are based on the first semester GPA.
- A team must list all wrestlers who compete in the regional tournament.
- There must be a minimum of 11 wrestlers competing in the regional tournament to qualify for the award.
- The team with the highest GPA will be declared academic state champion for their respective class.
None other than perennial state champion, Tuttle also leads the state in being named Wrestling Academic State Champion. Tuttle has been named Academic State Champion 18 times, including a streak of ten in a row from 2008-2017 and a streak of five in a row from 195-1999. 13 times when Tuttle won the academic state title, they also won the state wrestling championship.
Perry won four straight State and Academic State titles from 2004-2007.
In conjunction with the first sanctioned Girls State Tournament, the first Girls Academic State Champion was named in 2021, with Moore winning the title. Norman won in 2022 and Perry won in 2023.

Some of the information listed below came through my research, but most of it came from an incredible website https://www.iwasatthegame.com/ This easy to navigate website has all of the Oklahoma state champions for baseball, basketball, football, softball, tennis, and wrestling. There are records and statistics for several sports and even covers non-athletic events such as Academic Bowl, Jazz Band, One-Act Play and Speech/Debate.
