TISHOMINGO, Okla. – Murray State College Head Wrestling Coach, Paul Mayfield, announced the addition of Ruben Chavez to the Aggie wrestling coaching staff. Chavez brings a wealth of experience to the Aggie men’s and women’s wrestling programs, having dedicated over two decades to developing wrestlers at every level – from youth clubs to collegiate teams.
“We are very excited to welcome Coach Ruben Chavez to the team! Ruben’s energy, passion, and wrestling mind are a perfect fit for what we’re building here at Murray State,” said Coach Mayfield. “Ruben has a wealth of knowledge and strong ties to the area, which made him the perfect person to help guide our program into the future. We can’t wait to get to work!”
Before joining Murray State, Chavez served as the interim head coach for the women’s wrestling team at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. He has also coached at Carrollton Thunder Wrestling Club in Texas since June 2023. His extensive career includes impactful stints at City High School and Southeast Junior High in Iowa City, where he developed numerous standout athletes. Chavez also contributed to programs such as the Ubasa Wrestling Academy, Hawkeye Wrestling Club, and Iowa City MatPac, establishing a reputation for technical expertise and athlete development.
His background also includes leadership roles with elite wrestling organizations, such as USA Wrestling, where he has earned multiple coaching certifications including Copper, Bronze, Teal, and Silver, along with High Performance Leader, M3, and OPS credentials.
Chavez wrestled at the University of Iowa and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. He also holds a Master’s Degree in IT Management.
