The Perry Lady Maroon wrestlers continued an historic season, claiming their first ever regional title, winning the Class 5A East Regional title by 20 points over runner-up Harrah, with Bridge Creek finishing 3rd, 14 points behind Harrah.
Perry had never won an invitational tournament prior to this year, but won the Tuttle Tournament and the Will Rogers Conference Tournament, before claiming the regional title. Without a senior in the lineup, Perry crowned three champions and had three other placers, with AJ Waren, Sayben Owen, and Karissa Jones all winning titles, Peyton Reaves and Alexi Valencia placing 3rd, and Cami Wilson placing 4th.
Harrah is also taking six to state, with regional champion Madden Talley, 3rd place finishers Olivia Miller, Trinity Tanner, Kayleigh Braden, Jaylee Simmons, and 4th place finisher Aspen Atkinson.
Bridge Creek qualified four for the State Tournament, with Hannah Miller and Kasia Wong winning titles, Riley Chidester earning a runner-up finish, and Memphis Lane placing 5th.
Returning state placer, Madden Talley from Harrah claimed the 100 lb. title with a 17-5 major decision over Bridge Creek’s Riley Chidester. In the 105 lb. finals, Berryhill’s Grace Halbert trailed 10-5 entering the 3rd period, but used a takedown and near fall to claim the title with a 12-10 win over Jay’s Jocelynn Lopez.
Not only did sophomore Talli Washington make history as Woodland’s first state qualifier, she is going to state as a regional champion. Washington won the 110 lb. title with a fall in the finals over Pawhuska’s Savanna Hendren. 2024 state champion and 2X finalist, Kelcie Avallone from Barnsdall had three 1st period falls to claim the 115 lb. title. In the finals, Avallone won by fall in 1:37 over Poteau’s Kaidance Carnahan.
Perry state medalist AJ Waren went 4-0 with two falls and two tech falls to win the 120 lb. title. In the finals, Waren won by fall over Vian’s Maddison Turman, who came into the tournament unseeded. Perry got back-to-back regional titles, when junior Sayben Owen won the 125 lb. title with a 4-2 win in the finals over Salina state placer Macy Gorczynski. Owen, also a regional champion last year, advanced to the finals with three 1st period falls.
2X state placer Hannah Miller from Bridge Creek had all falls to win the 130 lb. title, including a fall in the finals over Warner’s Libberty Drake. Drake came into the tournament unseeded, but picked up wins over the #2 and #3 seeds to advance to the finals. Bridge Creek got their own back-to-back titles as undefeated freshman, Kasia Wong, recorded four 1st period falls to claim the 135 lb. title. Wong, who pinned 2024 state champion and West Regional winner, Alexus Jones from McLoud in a dual, won the title with a fall in 1:07 in finals over Mannford’s Jayden Jenkins. Jenkins was another unseeded wrestler to make the finals, as she recorded falls over the #1 and #4 seeds on her way to the finals.
Returning state champion Maggie Beaird from Mannford, opened her tournament with a 10-7 win over Perry’s Alexi Valencia, before recording falls in her last two matches to win the 140 lb. title. Beaird claimed the title with a fall in 1:29 in the finals over Jay’s Khloe Murray. At 145 lbs., Wagoner’s Khylie Austin advanced to the finals with a fall and 6-4 win over Harrah’s Jaylee Simmons. Austin, a 2024 state runner-up, won the title with a 15-6 major decision over Oologah state placer, Jentri Burch.
Oologah’s 2X state placer, Piper Morton won the 155 lb. title with all falls, including a fall in 2:48 in the finals over Wagoner’s Gia Garcia. Garcia had advanced to the finals with a 4-0 win over Skiatook state placer, Jayden Church. 170 lbs. featured three returning state runners-up (Jay’s Iliana Salazar, Oologah’s JayLee Sanders, and Wagoner’s Alyvia Edwards) and it was Salazar who came out on top and won the gold medal. Salazar pinned Edwards in 1:23 to move into the finals and claimed the title with a fall in 2:31 over Sanders.
Freshman Karissa Jones was Perry’s third regional champion, as she opened with a fall, before advancing to the finals with a 1-0 win over Kiefer’s Abi Jones. In the finals, Jones won by 19-1 tech fall over McLain’s Jazielyn Whitfield. Returning state champion Abagail Lacy gave Oologah their second regional champion, as she went 3-0 with three falls, including a fall in 0:17 in the finals over Kiefer’s Cynthya Love to claim the 235 lb. title. Lacy will enter the State Tournament with a perfect 20-0 season record.
