Domination! While everyone expected defending champion Blackwell to win the Class 3A Dual State title, few outside of Blackwell thought it would be such a dominating, record-breaking performance. Taking place Saturday at Tulsa Union, Blackwell started the day with a 67-12 win over Hobart, followed by a 63-6 semifinal win over Perry and then saved their best for last, blasting Salina 73-6 in the finals to claim the 2026 Class 3A Dual State championship.

In individual matches, competing against some of the best in Class 3A, Blackwell went an impressive 36-5 on the day. The domination can be seen in that 34 of the 36 wins were bonus point wins, including 23 falls and three tech falls (17 of the falls in the 1st period). The fall number would have been higher if it wasn’t for the six forfeits they received.

Blackwell rewrote the Dual State Record Book, with their performance putting them in the record book for the following:

  • Most Points Scored in the Finals – 73 (1st in the State)
  • Most Points Scored in the Tournament – 203 (6th best in the State and 2nd best in Class 3A)
  • Fewest Points Allowed in the Finals – 6 (Tied for 3rd best in the State and tied for 1st in Class 3A)
  • Fewest Points Allowed in the Semifinals – 6 (Tied for 7th best in the State and tied for 1st in Class 3A)
  • Most Points Scored in the Semifinals – 63 (5th best in Class 3A)
  • Fewest Points Allowed in the Tournament – 24 (3rd best in Class 3A)

The quarterfinals saw Blackwell oust Hobart 67-12, with Blackwell getting falls from Andrew Young, Grant Rowe, Kelby Ingram, Kole Hetrick, Sabon Batton, Mason Young, and Bowdy Thomason, with Hetrick getting the fastest fall in 0:14. Hobart, in Dual State for the first time since 2009, got falls from Eli Frank and Zayde Holmes.

Perry, making their state best 36th Dual State appearance, avenged a 52-27 December loss to Berryhill, with a 43-33 win. Perry got the momentum going early with a crucial win from Hunter Miner and falls from Andrew Kukuk, Landon Wilde, Aiden Tetik, Jaxon Miner, and Kaden Beier, a major decision from Sawyer Vollmer and a forfeit win for Logan Cook to advance to the semifinals. Berryhill got falls from Braden Strain, Mathew Moore,a nd Brice Lozinsky.

Salina defeated Lincoln Christian, 43-27, with falls from Jescee Sanders, Kage Gorczynski, Caleb Kelley, and tech falls from Connor Hess and Lane Walters. Lincoln Christian, making their first appearance at Dual State, got falls from Ethan Uyetake (his 100th career win), Drake Sheffield, top ranked Hudson Farris and Jake Hornstein, with Gabe Huntsinger adding a win over 6th ranked Spencer McClelland.

Marlow defeated Sperry 43-24, with falls from Clint Ladon, Damon Ruth, Clete Gilbert, and Brennen Harris, a tech fall from Tommy Miller, and major decision wins from Mason Choate and Rocket Rodriguez. Sperry got falls from Kade Runk and Zane Haddock.

Blackwell advanced to their fourth straight Dual State finals with a 63-6 semifinal win over Perry. Blackwell got falls from Ryder Short, Grant Rowe, Kelby Ingram, Rylan Sandoval, Kole Hetrick, Madden Edgar, Sabon Batton, Bowdy Thomason, with Hetrick once again leading the way with a fall in 0:20. Garrett Short, Mason Young, and Andrew Young added tech fall wins. Perry got wins from Logan Cook and Aiden Tetik.

In the other semifinal, Salina earned their first appearance in the Dual State finals and stopped Marlow’s streak of eight straight years in the finals, with a 36-30 win. Leading by one point going into the final match, Salina got a tech fall from top ranked Connor Hess to seal the win. Salina got falls from Jescee Sanders, Konway Williamson, Lane Walters, Caleb Kelley, Kolten Terwillger, and a win by Aiden Harsha. Salina got help from the girls program as Macy Gorczynski kept Marlow from getting bonus points with her efforts at 132 lbs. Marlow got falls from Clint Ladon, Justin Choate, and 2X state champion Tommy Miller.

On paper, it looked like there were some great matchups and it could be an interesting dual in the finals between Blackwell and Salina. There were five matches that pitted highly ranked wrestlers meeting head-to-head, including two #1 vs. #1 matchups. The dual wasn’t wrestled on paper, and Blackwell flexed their muscles with their in your face wrestling style and Salina didn’t have any answers.

The dual started at 175 lbs. and Salina unexpectedly forfeited that weight, allowing Blackwell to bump state champion Grant Rowe up to face #1 ranked Jescee Sanders at 190 lbs. After a scoreless 1st period, Rowe dominated, taking an 11-1 lead before pinning Sanders in 5:41.

Blackwell then bumper 2X state placer and returning runner-up Kelby Ingram up to 215 lbs. and he led 8-0 before pinning Kage Gorczynski to make the team score 18-0. Salina picked up their only win when state champion Konway Williamson won by fall in 0:37.

106 lbs. featured Blackwell’s #1 Rylan Sandoval vs. returning state runner-up and #2 Lane Walters. Walters scored the first takedown, but it was all Sandoval after that as he led 12-3, before pinning Walters in 3:07. 113 lbs. had Blackwell state champion and #1 ranked Garrett Short facing #3 Caleb Kelley. Salina struck first again, with Kelley getting the opening takedown, but that was short-lived as Short’s fast paced style led to five takedowns and a 16-6 lead before pinning Kelley in 4:15.

At 120 lbs., Salina’s retuning state runner-up and #1 ranked Kolten Terwilliger faced #3 Kole Hetrick. Terwilliger beat Hetrick 12-3 in last year’s State Tournament and jumped to a 9-2 lead midway through the 2nd period. Hetrick’s relentless, attacking style led to a takedown at the end of the 2nd period and another midway through the 3rd period. A desperation headlock attempt by Terwilliger was easily countered by Hetrick, with Hetrick adding a three-point near fall to complete the stirring 15-11 comeback win.

The large and enthusiastic Blackwell crowd exploded after Hetrick’s win and it was all Blackwell after that.

State champion Madden Edgar won by fall in 1:32 and Gage Backus won by fall in 3:02 to put Blackwell up 45-6. At 138 lbs., Blackwell state placer Sabon Batton pinned 2024 state placer Spencer McClelland in 0:31. Following a forfeit win for Mason Young, state runner-up and #1 ranked Bowdy Thomason won by fall in 0:46.

At 157 lbs., there was yet another highly anticipated bout as Blackwell’s #1 ranked Andrew Young faced returning state placer Connor Hess, who was ranked #1 was 165 lbs. Young dominated from the opening, scoring his first takedown 30 seconds into the match on his way to a 10-1 major decision. A Salina forfeit to Ryder Short ended the dual with Blackwell not only celebrating the 73-6 win, but also now the owner of the most points scored by any team in any class in the 38-year history of the Dual State Tournament.

The title gives Blackwell back-to-back Dual State titles and three titles in the past four year. It is their fourth title overall, also winning in 1991.

Following the championship performance, an excited head coach Connor Cline, stated “The team was dominate. They exceeded expectations. It’s great to see them go out and perform the way that they did in a dominant fashion against really quality opponents. I am proud as heck of all of them!”
