A banged-up Iowa State squad came to battle on Sunday afternoon in Ames, Iowa against the undefeated, #3 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. Similar to Friday night against UNI, the Pokes found themselves down after the first 5 matches. Also similar to Friday night, OSU relied on the dominance of their heaviest 5 weights to come back and win, this time by a score of 27-12.
The dual started at 125 where, as expected, Sophomore Ethan Perryman got the call for the Cyclones due to an injury to (15) Kysen Terukina. Perryman started off hot with two quick takedowns of (4) Troy Spratley in the first period. Spratley answered with a double leg of his own to narrow the gap to 6-5 and was able to ride Perryman for the rest of the period. Spratley was out easy in the 2nd to tie it at 6. Spratley then hit a slick single and was able to put Perryman on his back to start the onslaught. Another takedown and release by Spratley made it 16-8 heading into the 3rd. Spratley continued to push the pace, but wasn’t quite able to get the tech fall, but was able to get the 20-10 major decision.
After a few matches being replaced by Cael Hughes in the starting lineup, Reese Witcraft toed the line for the Cowboys at 133 against (5) Evan Frost. Witcraft scored first with a nice takedown near the end of the first. Forst was able to quickly escape and the period ended with Witcraft up 3-1. Witcraft got a quick escape in the second, and was able to fight off a deep shot by Witcraft before getting a takedown of his own near the end of the period, which resulted in 4 additional back points for Frost to go up 8-4. Witcraft let Frost up in the 3rd for an 9-4 lead for Frost. Even though Witcraft tried to push for a TD in the 3d, he couldn’t get it done and lost the match 9-4.
At 141, (4) Tagen Jamison was not able to avenge the Witcraft loss with a loss of his own over twin brother (13) Jacob Frost. The first period was pretty slow, with Jamison able to get a leg and elevate, but Frost was able to hop out of it and the period ended 0-0. Frost took down to start the second and was out easy to get the first point, 1-0. Neither party scored for the rest of the period so it ended with that score. Jamison was able to get out quickly in the 3d to tie it 1-1, where it ended to send it to Sudden Victory. Frost then hit a single leg to win the match 4-1. The whole match was more active than the score seemed, but not much in the way of committed scoring attempts. With the win, ISU took the 6-4 lead.
