Season Preview: 5A Girls

Last year, McLoud and Little Axe battled to the end, with McLoud winning a thriller, taking the Class 5A Girls team title by one single point.  McLoud is loaded again this year and enters as the preseason favorite.  Little Axe Oologah, Tonkawa, Tuttle, Harrah, Perry, Comanche and a host of other schools hope put together strong seasons and claim the 2026 state title.

Led by 2X state champions, Dru Turner (Hinton), Kylie Freeman (Tonkawa), Lyndi Cisco (Anadarko), and Brook West (Comanche), there are 13 returning or past state champions in Class 5A. Other returning champions include Carli Sisco, (McLoud), Launa Troutt (McLoud), Baylor Moore (Cordell), Maggie Beaird (Mannford), Abagail Lacy (Oologah) and 2024 state champions Kelcie Avallone (Barnsdall), Alexus Jones (Little Axe), Gage Vaughn (Caddo), and Chloe Vawter (Little Axe).

Three girls turned in impressive performances this summer, earning All-American honors at Fargo.  Oologah’s Abagail Lacy placed 3rd, McLoud’s Riley Samarripa placed 4th and Wagoner’s Alyvia Edwards placed 6th.

McLoud, coached by Chad Whitney, not only returns state champions Carli Sisco and Launa Troutt, they also have state runners-up Yazmin Nevarez and Addison Adams, along with state qualifiers Gabby Lozano, Brenlie Peacock, and Melanie Nenaikita.  Kendra Perrien was a state runner-up in 2024 and a favorite to win it last year, when an injury ended her season.  If that wasn’t enough, McLoud welcomes Class 6A runner-up Remy Whitney and Fargo All-American and state medalist Riley Samarripa to the team.  Whitney was at El Reno last year and Samarripa was at Harrah.

Little Axe, coached by Brandon Smith, has plenty of firepower with state champion and 2X finalist Chloe Vawter, state placers Sydney Harris and Aubrie Davis, and state qualifiers Riane Robinett, Alexus Jones, and Lilah Blair.  Jones won a state title in 2024, but was slowed by an injury most of last season.

Oologah, coached by Emma Johnson, finished strong last year with a 3rd place State Tournament finish and returns four state placers.  Abagail Lacy had an amazing 2025, pinning her way through State to win a state title as a freshman and then earned All-American honors at Fargo in the summer.  Oologah also returns state runner-up Jaylee Sanders, 2X state placer Piper Morton, and 4th place medalist Jentri Burch.

Tonkawa, coached by Chase Pfluger, is led by 2X state champion and 3X state placer Kylie Freeman.  Tonkawa also returns 2X state placer Jazmin Dollarhide, 2X state qualifier Haylee Ingram, and state qualifiers Addilynn Owen and Rylie Turner.

Hinton’s 2X state champion and 3X state placer, Dru Turner enters her senior season with a 76-match win streak (final two matches of 2023 and undefeated the past two years).  Last year’s State Tournament OW, Turner placed 3rd at the State Tournament in her freshman year, and then posted undefeated seasons (34-0 in 2024 and 40-0 in 2025) in winning state titles the past two years.  Turner won both titles with all falls at the State Tournament and has a sparkling 100-2 career record.

Tonkawa’s 2X state champion and 3X state placer, Kylie Freeman also placed 3rd as a freshman before rolling to title the next two years.  Last year, Freeman had all falls at the State Tournament to win the 145 lb. title and finish the year with a 31-1 record.  Freeman enters her senior season with a 74-9 career record.

Comanche’s, 2X state champion and 3X state placer, Brook West followed Turner and Freeman with a 3rd place State Tournament finish as a freshman, before winning state titles the past two years.  As a reminder, there was only one class for girls their freshman year, so they were competing against all of the schools in the state.  West had all falls at the State Tournament in winning the state title her sophomore year, and enters her senior year with a 61-10 career record.

Anadarko’s Lyndi Cisco enters her junior year as a 2X state champion as she is on track to become a 4X state champion.  Cisco went undefeated (14-0) in claiming the title her freshman year and enters her junior year with a 45-2 career record.

Last year, Carli Sisco took the first step in becoming a 4X state champion, winning the 100 lb. state title in her freshman year to help lead McLoud to the team title. Sisco finished the year with a 41-4 season record.  Three weight later, teammate Launa Troutt, not only won the 115 lb. state title, but her tech fall win over returning state champion Kelcie Avallone, gave McLoud the crucial bonus points to hold off Little Axe and claim the team championship.  Troutt, a state qualifier as a freshman, and 3rd place finisher as a sophomore, finished 43-2 last year and carries a 107-23 career record into her senior season.

Cordell’s Baylor Moore placed 2nd at last year’s regional tournament, but avenged her regional finals loss to claim the 120 lb. state title last year.  Moore, a junior, placed 4th as a freshman, before winning the title last year.  Moore was 34-4 last season and has a 48-8 career record.

Competing for Skiatook last year, Beaird, placed 3rd at the regional tournament, but avenged that loss with a fall in the semifinals on her way to the 140 lb. title.  Beaird went 30-5 last year and showed rapid improvement, going from a state qualifier to a state champion in one year.

Oologah’s Abagail Lacy went 12-2 last season with all falls at the regional and state tournaments to claim the 235 lb. state title in her freshman year.  Lacy went on to earn a 3rd place All-American finish at Fargo during the summer.

Competing for Pawhuska, Kelcie Avallone had all falls at the 2024 State Tournament to claim the 110 lb. state title and finish the year with a 32-1 record.  Avallone earned a runner-up finish last year, falling to McLoud’s Launa Troutt in the finals.  Competing for Barnsdall this year, Avallone enters her senior season with a 90-8 career record.

In 2024, Alexus Jones capped an impressive freshman year winning the 130 lb. state title to seal the team state championship for Little Axe.  Jones finished the year with a 29-5 record.  Battling injuries, Jones saw limited action last year, but did returned to the State Tournament with a 4th place regional finish.

In 2024, Caddo freshman Gage Vaughn went a perfect 19-0 to claim the 135 lb. state title. Vaughn earned a runner-up finish last season and enters her junior year with a 47-2 career record.

Little Axe’s Chloe Vawter enters her junior year as a 1X state champion and 2X state finalist.  Vawter won the 2024 state title with all falls and enters the season with a 58-8 career record.

Returning state runners-up include Remy Whitney (McLoud), Yazmin Nevarez (McLoud), Kelcie Avallone (Barnsdall), Jolee Thomas (Plainview), Liz McLeroy (Tuttle), Gage Vaughn (Caddo), Addison Adams (McLoud), Iliana Salazar (Jay), Jaylee Sanders (Oologah), Alyvia Edwards (Wagoner), and Chloe Vawter (Little Axe).  2024 state runners-up were Katelyn Patterson (Cache), Roseline Baker (Mannford), and Kendra Perrien (McLoud).

Girls Wrestling continues to grow as Class 5A is up to 95 teams this year.  Last year, 89 teams registered with the OSSAA as having a girls team, with 75 teams competing at the Regional Tournaments.  Schools that added wrestling are Braggs, Cushing, Hominy, Keota, Okemah, Pathways, Sperry, and Star Spencer.  Schools that offered girls wrestling in 2025, but not this school year were Empire and Lawton Academy AS.

The only changes in classification shows Douglass trading places with Ardmore, putting Douglass in 6A and Ardmore in 5A this year.  Douglass returns sophomore Feliciti Doolittle, who earned a runner-up finish at 105 lbs. last season.
