Family State Champions

Wrestling has always been a family affair with the whole family getting involved and doing their part to support the wrestlers. A question was raised recently about brothers that won state titles and that set in motion the latest obsession… lets go with project :), in compiling a list of brothers that won state titles.  Of course you can’t stop there, we also need to know father-son state champions, father-daughter state champions, brother-sister state champions and sisters that have won state titles.

Surprisingly, only one three-generation family of state champions has been found.  It is a well-known wrestling name, as the Chesbro family is the only known three-generation family to win state titles.  Tommy won a state title for Stillwater in 1957, his son Todd, won four state titles for Stillwater from 1984-87 and Todd’s son Gabe won a state title for Bishop Kelley in 2021.

Other well known wrestling names top the various lists with the Henning Family owning the most state titles, with dad Greg and sons Jeff, Jared, and Ryan winning 12 state championships.  Close behind, Shane Roller along with his son, Jace and daughter, Jadyn have won 11 state titles. Next comes the Bailey family, with dad Leo and sons Dallas, Tanner, and Paden, combining to win nine state titles.

It’s the Henning family again for most state titles by brothers as Jeff, Jared and Ryan won 11 titles.  Lee Roy, John, Pat, and Mark Smith combined to win 10 state titles.

There have been three father-son combos in which each person won at least three state titles.  The Bailey family was the first to do it with dad, Leo winning three titles and son Dallas winning four state titles.  4X state champion Shane Roller and his 3X state champion son Jace were the next to join the club.  The Teague family was the third to accomplish this feat, with dad Derrick winning three titles and son Ethan winning his third title this past year.

There is already a father-daughter duo winning four state titles and again it is the Roller family, as Shane was joined by his daughter Jadyn this past year as a 4X state champion.

It would be next to impossible to locate all cousins, nephews, nieces and other family members that have won state titles, but two families that easily stand out for most state champions by an extended family are the Smith’s and the Roller’s.

The Smith family has a total of 21 state titles! Lee Roy (2), John (2), Pat (3), Mark (3), Joseph (3), Sam (1), and Luke (1) are joined by Chris Perry (4), Zach White (1) and Matt White (1) in winning state titles.

The Roller family has won 16 state titles with Keith (1), Jimmy (1), Michael (2), Shane (4), Nic (1), Jace (3) and Jadyn (4) all winning state titles while wrestling for Bixby.

So far, we have found 53 father-son champions, and three father-daughter state champions. In total 140 brothers were found to have won state titles and twins Kyrain and Kyrstan Perez from Westmoore were the first sisters to win state titles.  There have been five brother-sister state champions.

Given wrestling’s century-long history, it’s likely some brother or father-son champions have been overlooked.  Please contact us with any missing information so we can update the records.
