UCO Currently Leads Super Regional: Awaiting Decision on Final Score

The Division Two Super Regional IV had all the trappings you want in a big tournament. Good wrestling, big upsets, back and forth matches, and a great team race.

The semifinals got exciting early for UCO fans and followers. Edmond North product Paxton Rosen has been dominant all season but somewhat mysteriously omitted from the NWCA National rankings all season. Here was his first chance to prove his worth and he took advantage of that opportunity. Rosen matched up with the #1 seed in the tournament and #1 ranked wrestler in the nation Mason Turner in the semifinals. Rosen comfortably upset Turner 8-2 to make the finals. This was followed up by upset wins by Gabe Johnson at 149 and Ty Lucas at 157 who both were lower seeds in the semifinals and both also picked up upsets to make the finals. They were joined by heavy hitters Dalton Abney and Heath Gray who both won their semifinal as well.

Braden Morgan was the only UCO wrestler to drop his first match but put together two comeback wins on the consolation side to make the consolation semifinals. Along with Morgan, the rest of the UCO squad went 5 for 5 in the consolation semifinals to all make the 3rd and 4th place match. That run put the Bronchos into first place in the team race after jockeying back and forth with McKendree and Lindenwood for most of the day.

Rosen kicked the placement matches off by solidifying that his upset wasn’t a flash in the pan win. Rosen beat 11th ranked Christian Mejia of McKendree 4-0 to secure his first regional title. Tanner Cole continued that momentum at 133 with a 5-1 win over McKendree’s Brody Norman in the 3rd-4th place match. Both these ultimately proving significant in the team race and putting UCO in the lead.

UCO then fell in back to back matches as Nate Keim lost in the 3rd/4th place match and true freshman Gabe Johnson fell in sudden victory OT at 149.

Ty Lucas put the Bronchos back in the win column after picking up a late takedown vs. Anthony Scantlin to win 5-2 and give UCO their second regional champion. This pulled UCO within four in the team race.

Dayton Garrett fell in the 3rd place match at 165, but the Bronchos were simultaneously helped out by McKendree in the 1st place match as they knocked off Lindenwood and kept UCO in the team race.

Wyatt Jordan won his 3rd place match at 174 while Lindenwood also won in the finals.

A huge swing came for UCO at 184 as Heath Gray won 1st place while Lindenwood fell in the third place match. Lindenwood had no wrestlers still in at 197 and HWT remaining.

Dalton Abney fell in the first place match at 197 and Braden Morgan fell in the third place match at HWT.

This left UCO up by one with only the “true second” matches remaining according to Trackwrestling.

Tanner Cole was up first in those and won 6-3.

Following true second, he scores on Track showed UCO winning by one point. UCO came out and announced that is not official and scores are still being tallied.
