EDMOND – A trio of first-period falls highlighted Central Oklahoma’s 40-6 thumping of Colorado State-Pueblo Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House on Alumni Day.
The No. 5-ranked and two-time defending national champion Bronchos earned seven bonus-point wins, with 133 Peter Rolle, 149 Dylan Brown and 184 Garrett Wells all scoring falls in less than two minutes.
UCO also got a technical fall from 197 Emmanuel Skillings along with major decisions from 157 Gabe Johnson and 165 Hunter Jump. Studd Morris picked up a forfeit at 125 and Judson Rowland earned a tough decision at heavyweight as the Bronchos improved to 9-1 with their 23rd straight home win.
“It was a great day,” said head coach Todd Steidley, who improved to 110-13 in his ninth year at the helm. “We wrestled pretty well and picked up a lot of bonus points, which is always good.
“It was awesome to see all the former wrestlers come out to support us and I especially appreciate Coach (David) James being here. We have a championship tradition at UCO and it was great to celebrate that with a good win.”
Central honored its 1984-85 and 1994-95 national championship teams during intermission midway through the dual and by that point the Bronchos were already in command with a 22-3 lead.
It took less than two minutes for UCO to go ahead 12-0 as Rolle followed Morris’ opening-match forfeit with a fall in just 1:36. The sixth-ranked Rolle had a pair of quick takedowns before scoring his seventh pin of the season.
The Thunderwolves prevailed in a close match at 141, but the Bronchos followed with three straight bonus wins.
Brown started that spurt, taking Cole Bennett straight to his back for a fall at the 1:44 mark. The second-ranked Johnson cruised to a 14-4 rout behind a four-takedown attack and Jump had three takedowns and a near-fall in a 13-0 shutout.
CSU-P picked up its second win at 174, then Wells turned an early takedown into his fourth fall of the season at 1:54. Skillings racked up eight takedowns in a 24-8 technical fall that ended late in the second period and Rowland ended the dual with a tough 4-2 victory behind a first-period takedown.
UCO is back at home next Sunday, hosting MIAA rival Fort Hays State in a 2 p.m. dual.
