The Oklahoma Wrestling Community Mourns the Loss of Nick Williams

Sad day yesterday in the Oklahoma wrestling community as long-time Altus wrestling coach Nick Williams passed away after a long battle with ALS.

Williams was a three-time state placer and state champion in high school at Geary before wrestling collegiately at Oklahoma State. He was a three-time letter winner at Oklahoma State and a member of the 1994 NCAA Championship team.

Nick spent one year at Mangum and six at Madill before taking over the Altus High School program in 2004. Williams’ teams won fourteen district titles, five regional championships, and had seven top-four state tournament teams, including a pair of runners-up. He coached twenty state champions, nineteen All-State participants, and eleven high school All-Americans while compiling a 223-78 dual record. Williams has served as vice president of the Oklahoma Wrestling Coaches Association in addition to coaching in the All-State dual.

In 2018, Nick was inducted into the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and in the same year was honored with the “Gallagher Award” presented annually to an OSU alumnus who exemplifies the spirit and leadership eminent in the tradition of champions.

Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.
