Streck Named Regional Wrester of Year

MANHEIM, Pa. (March 30) – Central Oklahoma national champion Shawn Streck has been named NCAA Division II Super Regional IV Wrestler of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Streck finished 26-0 with 16 bonus-point wins during a dominating junior season while giving up just one takedown. The Merrillville, Ind. Won the Midwest Classic title in December and a second straight regional crown before becoming UCO’s first-ever heavyweight national champion with an 8-3 finals win over Glenville State’s Jared Campbell

“This is a great honor for Shawn,” head coach Todd Steidley said. “He works extremely hard every day and has been a great team leader for us. We’re just really proud of what he’s accomplished and what he means to our program.”

Streck came to UCO at the semester break last year and went on to earn All-America honors with a sixth-place national finish after defaulting his last two matches with injury.

He missed the first six weeks of this season before coming back and overwhelmed most opponents the rest of the way in helping lead the Bronchos to the national team title.

Streck now joins five other regional wrestler of the year winners in the ballot for NCAA Division II Wrestler of the Year, which will be announced in the coming weeks after a vote of head coaches.
