A dozen Sooners competed at the Roadrunner Open at California State University of Bakersfield (CSUB) on Sunday November, 24. This was a great opportunity for the young guys to get some mat time, and nine true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen represented the Sooners very well. Beric Jordan led the way, winning the 125 pound weight class, followed by three third place finishers, and four additional top 5 placers. All of the Sooners won matches in what was a very successful day for the young wrestlers.
Beric Jordan was dominant all day long, picking up three bonus point victories in his four matches. After receiving a first round bye, Jordan clicked off wins by pinfall and technical fall (15-0) in his first two matches to make the semifinals. In his final two matches, Jordan took out the starters for California Baptist (CBU) and Cal Poly. Jordan beat Mitchell Neiner of CBU by a 10-3 decision in the semifinals. In the finals match, Jordan dominated Koda Holeman of Cal Poly by picking up an 11-2 major decision. Beric Jordan’s OU career is off to a fantastic start, as he has now won tournaments in back to back weeks after winning the Daktronics Invitational at South Dakota State just a week ago. Jordan is now 8-0, with 7 of his victories earning bonus points.
Alex Braun donned the Sooners singlet for the first time this weekend, competing in the 141 pound bracket. After receiving a first round bye, Braun won his first collegiate match by a 5-0 decision to make the quarterfinals. In his quarterfinals match, Braun faced off against Jack Consiglio of Stanford and dropped a close decision matchup. In a true showing of the type of competitor that Braun is, he would then reel off four consecutive bonus point victories. In his first consolation match, Braun scored a 10-2 major decision victory, which he followed up with a pinfall victory to make the consolation semifinals. After dominating his way to an 18-1 tech fall victory in the semifinals, Braun would get a first period pinfall to claim third place.
