This week I traveled over to Putnam City High school as they hosted a couple of cross town 6A opponents with the Enid Plainsmen and the Norman Tigers. Dual season has been in full tact as many of the schools have been wrapping up District duals the past couple of weeks and getting the last bit of preparation done before hitting the final stretch into the post season.
The night started with Enid taking on Norman to kick off the duals. Enid had a few missing spots in the lower weights, so Norman was able to jump out to a pretty commanding lead early on. At 132 Isaias Perez of Enid pulled off a comeback fall to bring some energy into the arena. This dual was just fall after fall and both teams seemed to trade one after the other to tie things up heading into the halfway mark of the dual. A couple of seasoned veterans for Norman, including the Cole brothers, allowed Norman to really pull away with the dual in the upper weights. At 215 Mitchell of Enid got a 2nd period fall and the team went bananas cheering for their teammate. You could tell there was pure joy on his face, which was a cool moment to witness. Norman secured the dual with a fall at heavyweight to finish with a score of 53-24.
Norman moved from the bench up to the stands, and the lights went down, the fog machine kicked on and the Putnam City Pirates were introduced. I am a sucker for a hyped wrestling intro, something that I think really adds value and excitement especially for the kids! Also am a little bit jealous because we didn’t get anything like that when I was in highschool (lol).
Putnam City wasted absolutely no time as they started with a big headlock from Fugett at 120 and from that point on never let off the gas pedal. This dual was another one that if you enjoy pins, this was the dual to watch. I believe every match except one, ended with a pin. The heart of Putnam City’s lineup is the lower middle-weights and they are a fun group of kids to watch. Monty Hall, who was just coming off a breakout performance as the Yukon tournament champion, continued to ride the wave as he got the 1st period tech at 144.
