Oklahoma State Wrestlers Clinch Victory: A Recap of the Broncho Open Triumph

Domination

Oklahoma State took 16 attached and unattached team members (plus Cowboy Wrestling Club team member, and OSU Commit Mirzo Khayitov) to Hamilton Field House in Edmond Sunday to wrestle in the Broncho Open. And while it was not a huge tournament, it was good to see some of the young and up and coming wrestlers get some action, even if against less accomplished opponents.

The team showed out and won 7 out of 10 weights (8, if you include Khayitov) and 14 of the 16 official team members finished in the top 4.

At 125, Cowboy Jayce Mullin took 1st place after a 17-5 major decision over Guy Clevenger (UCO) and 12-5 decision over Garrett Johnson (NE OK). In the finals he met OSU teammate Sam Smith, who had previously dominated his competition with a 17-5 major over Eli Kirk (UCO) and 18-5 tech fall over Aden Sanders (UCO). The final was a barnburner, where Mullin and Smith were tied 12-12 going into the first overtime period. The match ended on a stalling call against Smith, who took 2nd place.

133 only had four entries, but Cowboy Zach Blankenship (wrestling unattached), went 3-0 to finish first. He pinned Michael Domino (NE OK) and Drayton Kennedy (NE OK), each in just over a minute. His final round against Vinnie Citrano (NE OK) was a little tougher, but he scored the only takedown of the match in the first period to win 4-1.

Andrew Bloemhof (wrestling unattached) and Mitchell Borynack were the guys at 141. Bloemhof had himself a day, taking 1st place in this bracket. He beat Marcus Terry (NE OK) 7-0, eeked out a 14-13 win over Josh Taylor (UCO) where he needed a last period takedown to pull ahead, got an injury forfeit during a match against Will Heger (UCO) and then majoring Ryder Ramsey 14-3 in the finals. After pinning his first opponent, Hunter Waits (NE OK), Borynack did not do nearly as well, losing 10-3 to Ryder Ramsey and then losing a close 5-3 decision on a last-minute reversal to Corbin White (Ft. Hays St.)…
