Oklahoma State vs. Northern Iowa: Building the weekend Momentum

#12 Oklahoma State (8-1) vs Northern Iowa (4-2)

All Time Record vs: 18-2

The Cowboys hit the road again and head to the state of Iowa. There they’ll take on #13 Northern Iowa and #3 Iowa State over three days. Last year Northern Iowa came to Stillwater and upset OK State at home 19-15 in their first loss of the season. This year the teams are much closer in the rankings and this dual could feature eight ranked matches.

OSU is coming off a win over #30 West Virginia, in what looked like one of their best performances to date. A big question from that dual however is the status of Trevor Mastrogiovanni. The two-time qualifier has been absent the past two duals and Coach Smith has said it was health related. There have been rumors swirling but in the meantime true freshman Zach Blankenship has started against two ranked opponents but lost both.

There are quite a few spots for the Cowboys to pull some rankings upsets. If they can do that and get some bonus, they should be able to get some revenge from last season.

125lbs: #23 Trevor Mastrogiovanni (13-5)/Zach Blankenship (8-3) vs Kyle Golhoffer (5-8)

Mastrogiovanni has struggled this season, but he is still the best option at this weight. Blankenship only has one more start remaining while on redshirt, and no other 125 has matches this season. There is a possibility of Reece Witcraft making it back to 125 as he went 5-2 there last season. With the short turnaround between UNI and ISU, OK State will need a reliable option this weekend.

Golhoffer has a losing record this season, but almost all of his losses have come to ranked opponents. He has solid wins as well over Tucker Owens and Kase Mauger. If Mastrogiovanni makes his return, I’d expect a decision win. He may push for bonus but Golhoffer has only been bonused twice this year. If Blankenship uses his final start then it could be a tough but winnable match for the freshman. I think Blankenship uses his last start year and shows some more offense in a tight match.

Prediction: Golhoffer Dec. Blankenship (OSU 0 UNI 3)

133lbs: #2 Daton Fix (14-0) vs #11 Kyle Biscoglia (14-4)

Coming into this match, Fix is 2-0 against Biscoglia with two decision wins.
