The Cowboys didn’t get the start they wanted as Jett Strickenberger pinned Troy Spratley to open things up at 125. Strickenber got the first takedown, then Spratley picked up a reversal and had eliminated riding time before giving up a reversal and getting put on his back just before the close of the first period.

Cael Hughes answered with an overtime win at 133. A bit of a back-and-forth battle with Tommy Maddox went to overtime when Maddox got a late takedown. But Hughes responded with a takedown in OT to put OSU back in the win column. At 141, Tagen Jamison methodically worked his way to a 14-4 major decision with a buzzer-beating takedown in the third period.

Cutter Sheets stepped in at 149 against WVU’s Sam Hillegas. Sheets battled and with a nice duck under had tied things up 5-5 late, but after a reversal and riding time, fell 8-6. In the final match before intermission, Caleb Fish rolled to a major decision over Sasha Gavronsky at 157 with some late fireworks after putting Gavronsky on his back in the third.

Then we had some history as the first-ever “Cowgirl” wrestling match in Gallagher-Iba took place. The Cowgirl Wrestling Club’s Kaiulani Garcia took on Ottawa’s Darby Weidl in a freestyle exhibition match. Weidl picked up a fall in the first period.

In the most anticipated matchup of the night, Cam Amine took on WVU’s Peyton Hall. There was no score in the first. In the second, Amine took bottom, and Hall put together a really solid ride for most of the period before Amine got an escape with just a few seconds left in the second. After a short ride in the third period, Hall got an escape of his own to tie things up. With a few seconds remaining in the third and riding time locked for Hall, Amine needed a takedown to tie things up. Amine went for it, but a takedown late for Hall ultimately sealed the win for Hall and WVU.

After 165, Oklahoma State trailed in the dual 9-7. This is only the third dual they’ve trailed in all season and by far the deepest into a dual that they’ve trailed.

That lead didn’t last long as back-to-back tech falls by Dean Hamiti and Dustin Plott put the Cowboys up by nine. At 197, Surber scored first with a second-period escape, but Ian Bush responded with a takedown going up 3-1. Surber got another escape and went to the third period trailing by one and starting the period on top. After a challenge by the WVU corner, Surber was called for a locked hands call. After the score change, Surber released Bush, took a shot, and got a takedown. Needing a ride out to win, Surber did exactly that before another challenge from WVU on a locked-hands call. They didn’t get this one and Surber won 6-5.

At HWT, Wyatt Hendrickson closed things out with a quick fall and the Cowboys won the dual 30-12.
