The first full weekend of the girls regular season started with a bang, with Bixby making a strong statement on the national scene, Broken Arrow turning in an impressive performance at the Jay Border Wars and Cache, Norman and Mannford also winning tournament titles.
Competing against 72 other schools, including three of the top five teams in the nation, Bixby topped them all in claiming the prestigious team title at the Women’s Ironman in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Earning top finishes for Bixby were Millie Azlin (2nd), Aiyana Perkins (3rd), Jay’la Ford (3rd), Malana Miller (4th), Lily Lane (5th), Jadyn Roller (8th) and Aubrey Martin-Hall (8th).
The battle for the team title became a three-team race between 2nd ranked Olentangy Orange, OH, 3rd ranked Cleveland, TN and 5th ranked Bixby. Bixby won the title with an outstanding team performance, with a critical match late in the tournament, deciding the winner. In the consolation finals at 125 lbs., Bixby’s Aiyana Perkins earned a 3rd place finish with a fall over her Olentangy Orange opponent to provide the winning points as Bixby won by 4.5 points over Olentangy Orange, with Cleveland in 3rd place, 17 points behind Bixby.
3rd ranked Millie Azlin scored two falls to advance to the finals, but fell to the nation’s number one ranked wrestler (and ranked 5th in P4P) Piper Fowler from Cleveland, TN to earn a runner-up finish at 170 lbs. Azlin’s semifinal fall over Lydia Heinrich from Olentangy Orange was another pivotal win for Bixby on their way to the title.
Jay’la Ford provided yet another big win with a consolation semifinal fall over her Olentangy Orange opponent on her way to a 3rd place finish at 145 lbs. Ford had four falls out of her five wins. Malana Miller had two falls on her way to a 4th place finish at 235 lbs.
Lily Lane won four matches, including two falls, to earn a 5th place finish at 110 lbs. Aubrey Martin-Hall and Jadyn Roller both placed 8th, with Martin-Hall getting falls in all three of her wins.
Union took a partial team and placed 15th at the tournament, with McKenna Wilson placing 3rd, Dakota Harris placing 6th and Kelcie Luker in 8th place.
Broken Arrow crowned five champions to easily win the 25-team Jay Border Wars Tournament. Edmond North, without Bella Williams, Taylor Ellis Hishaw and Clover Williams, crowned two champions to earn the runner-up position with Class 5A state champion Little Axe finishing three points ahead of McLoud for third place.
