The day started with quarterfinal action which saw Marlow overwhelm Perry 73-0, 5th seeded Pawnee slip by 4th seeded Sperry 42-34, Blackwell take out Comanche 64-6 and Salina win over Cascia Hall 52-25.

In the semifinals, Marlow continued their outstanding wrestling, winning 53-21 over Pawnee.  Marlow’s ten wins included Zach Dawson earning his 2nd win this season over state champion Grady Mittasch, this time using three takedowns and a reversal to take a convincing 10-4 win. Lawson Knox, Gage Hixon, Tommy Miller, Jaxson Murray, and Clint Ladon all won by fall with Keller Kizzar winning by tech fall.  Blackwell won 10 matches including falls by Jason Osgood, Kruz Goff, Jaxson Brown, Sabon Batton, Peyton Head, and Grant Rowe to move into the finals with a 51-21 win over Salina.

The Marlow-Blackwell finals dual drew the biggest crowd of the tournament as both schools had a large number of fans cheering on their teams.  The dual started at 190 lbs. and Blackwell struck first getting back-to-back 1st period falls from 2X state runner-up Jason Osgood and 2X state champion Kruz Goff.

3A Wrestler Interviews:

Marlow got on the board at 285, when freshman JH state placer Clete Gilbert jumped to a 6-0 lead before picking up a fall for the Outlaws. At 106 lbs., Blackwell state placer Jaxson Brown earned a major decision win and 2X state placer Louden Wolfe extended Blackwell lead to 22-6 with a 1st period fall.

Marlow’s power showed in the next four weights as they swept four in a row with three bonus point wins. State champion Tommy Miller scored a takedown with 39 seconds left to earn an 8-0 major decision win over freshman JH state placer Madden Edgar. 3X New Mexico state champion Marcus Williams used three takedowns and three sets of near fall points to earn a 15-2 major decision win over Sabon Batton. Marlow’s state runner-up Keller Kizarr hit a nice ankle pick to score an early takedown and then used good defense to hold off the upset attempts by Blackwell Peyton Head. 2X state placer Brantz Bateman gave Marlow their first lead of the day as he scored a fall in 0:44 to put the Outlaws up 23-22.

Grant Rowe put Blackwell back in the lead, needing just 19 seconds to earn a fall, making the team score 28-23 in favor of Blackwell. Freshman JH state runner-up Clint Ladon started another four match win streak for Marlow as he scored five takedowns to earn an 11-3 major decision win to put Marlow within one point of Blackwell with three matches to go.

The good news for Marlow was the three remaining wrestlers are all ranked number one and have combined for one state title and seven state medals. With the Marlow crowd roaring their support, 2X state finalist and 3X state placer Zach Dawson won by fall to give Marlow the lead. To the delight of the Marlow fans, state champion and 2X finalist Cade Gilbert sealed the win for the Outlaws as he used a 2nd period reversal and 3rd period takedown to earn a 4-2 win over 2X state qualifier Lawson Lusk. A forfeit to state runner-up and 2X state placer Lawson Knox made the final score, Marlow 42, Blackwell 28.

After the dual, Marlow Head Coach Andy Howington commented “Big time emotions to win this. We knew we were going to have to come from behind, but this team has overcome adversity all year long. This was the first time this season that we had our full team because of injuries and illnesses. We had a game plan and went out and did the job that it took to beat a really tough well-coached Blackwell team. We wrestled hard and we wrestled with heart!”

This was Marlow’s 6th Dual State title and the 7th straight year they have been in the Dual State finals. Marlow won titles in 1994, 2006, 2008 and back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022.
