Dual State Recap: 5A & 6A

Class 5A crowned a first time champion while Class 6A crowned a repeat champion in a thrilling Dual State Tournament that took place at the Stride Bank Center in Enid over the weekend. In Class 5A, a mid-dual run of five wins in a row helped propel Elgin to a 40-27 win over Coweta while Stillwater simply had too much fire-power to take a 38-22 win in their highly anticipated Class 6A finals dual with Edmond North.  

Elgin came into the tournament as the number one seed but not much success in past appearances. This was their sixth trip to Dual State, but only had one victory in 2021 in those visits. That all changed this year as they opened with a 48-18 win over Pryor, took out defending champion Collinsville 48-21 in the semifinals and then won the title with the 40-27 win over 2nd seeded Coweta which had fought their way to the finals with two close wins, taking a 32-28 quarterfinal win over Piedmont and 36-34 semifinal win over Lawton Mac.

Coweta got on the board first with a fall from Deacon Peterson, before Elgin got falls from Brice Martin and top ranked Hunter Jackson to take the 12-6 lead. Coweta countered with falls from Toby Shipman and Colby Eighinger to retake the lead. Starting at 132, Elgin’s five match run…
