In a down to the wire thriller, McLoud claimed the Class 5A Girls State Tournament by ONE POINT over defending champion Little Axe. McLoud pushed four into the finals to take a 23 point lead into Saturday’s action, but a spirited Little Axe comeback made it a battle to the end, with McLoud crowning two champions to just hold off Little Axe. Rounding out the top five teams, found Oologah-Talala placing 3rd, with Harrah in 4th and Jay in 5th place.
Freshman Carli Sisco won the 100 lb. title to become McLoud’s first girls state champion and joined just a few matches later by teammate Launa Troutt. Sisco had a tech fall and fall to get to the finals and then won the title with a 6-1 win over Jay senior and returning state medalist Angela Lee. Troutt opened with a tight 1-0 win over Little Axe’s Sydney Harris, but finished with a fall in the semifinals and a huge 15-0 tech fall win in the finals over returning state champion Kelcie Avallone from Pawhuska.
Yazmin Nevarez and Addison Adams earned runner-up finishes and scored important bonus points with Nevarez advancing to the finals with two falls and Adams picking up one fall on her way to the finals. Obviously when a team wins by one point, each win, each bonus point earned, whether it be the 1st rounds falls from Brenlie Peacock and Laine Walker or Troutt’s tech fall in the finals, all of them were critical in McLoud winning the team title.
McLoud, coached by William Winters, brought eight to the State Tournament and suffered an early blow when regional champion Melania Nenaikita suffered an injury and had to medical forfeit out of the tournament. They rebounded from that loss, winning 10 of 13 matches with eight falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals to open up their 23 point lead.
Little Axe brought 10 to the State Tournament, but had a rough first day, putting only Amelia Earhart and Chloe Vawter in the finals. Little Axe started their comeback early, pushing four into the consolation finals, with Anjelica Morales, Sydney Harris and Ainsley Jennings all winning by fall and Aubrie Davis avenging a regional finals loss. Those wins put Little Axe on top by 2.5 points, but it wasn’t enough to hold off McLoud.
Led by state champion Amelia Earhart, Little Axe ended up with six state placers. Earhart had three falls to claim the 170 lb. title, with Chloe Vawter advancing to the finals with a fall and tech fall to earn a runner-up finish. Anjelica Morales, Sydney Harris, Aubrie Davis and Ainsley Jennings all placed 4th for Little Axe.

Hinton junior Dru Turner opened the tournament with falls in 0:25 and 1:18 before winning her second state title with a fall in 3:10 over Tuttle’s Liz Mcleroy to claim the 125 lb. title. Turner was a 3rd place medalist as a freshman before winning titles the past two season. Turner, 40-0 on the year and a perfect 74-0 over the past two seasons was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament. The win in the finals was Turner’s 100th career win as she improved her career record to 100-2.

Harrah junior Addie Morse also had three falls in the tournament and won her state title with a fall in the finals in 1:58 over McLoud’s Yazmin Nevarez. Morse, now a 2X state champion and 3X finalist, finished 42-2 on the year. Morse, also a 2X Fargo All-American has a career record of 104-7.

Tonkawa junior Kylie Freeman won the 145 lb. title with three straight falls. Freeman, now a 2X state champion and 3X state placer, hit a beautiful headlock in the finals to pin Tecumseh’s Trinity Rakestraw in 0:50. Freeman finished the year with a 31-1 record and her career record stands at 74-9. Rakestraw, 38-4 on the year with a 109-25 career record, finished her career as a 2X state finalist and 3X state placer.

Anadarko sophomore Lyndi Cisco took the second step in becoming a 4X state champion in winning the 155 lb. title with a fall in 1:14 over Jay sophomore Iliana Salazar. Cisco finished the year with a 31-2 record and has a two-year record of 45-2.

Comanche junior Brook West also became a 2X state champion and 3X state placer with a 3-0 sudden victory win over Wagoner freshman Alyvia Edwards in the finals. While neither wrestler could score in regulation, West countered a headlock attempt by Edwards for the winning takedown to claim the 190 lb. title. West finished the year 28-3 and a 61-10 career record.

Seven schools crowned their first girls state champions as Tecumseh, McLoud, Cordell, Cache, Catoosa, Skiatook and Oologah all had individual state champions to join the ever-growing list of teams with state champions.
Tecumseh senior Vivian Hayes ended her career with a 10-6 win over freshman Feliciti Doolittle from Douglass to claim the 105 lb. title and become Tecumseh first state champion. Doolittle was the second state placer for Douglass and their first state finalist.

Carli Sisco won the 100 lb. title to become McLoud’s first state champion and was joined just a few matches later by teammate Launa Troutt, who won the 115 lb. title.

Last year as a freshman, Baylor Moore became Cordell’s first state placer and this year she moved up the podium, winning the 120 lb. title with a fall in 5:45 over Plainview’s Jolee Thomas. The finals match between Moore and Thomas was a great battle with lots of action. Moore led 12-7 entering the 3rd period, but Thomas came back to make a one-point match before Moore took Thomas down to her back and getting the winning fall.

Coming into the tournament, Cache has had six state placers, including Shiann Famero, but no state champion yet. Famero changed that, winning the 130 lb. state title with a fall in the finals over defending state champion Josaline Blevins from Stilwell. Famero finished the year with a 38-2 record and a 95-15 career record.

Catoosa’s Frankie West also had to beat a returning state champion to win her state title. West had three falls in the tournament, including a fall in the finals over Caddo state champion Gage Vaughn to win the 135 lb. title and finish her senior year with a 30-1 season record.

Skiatook junior Maggie Beaird placed 3rd at the regional tournament, but avenged her regional loss with a semifinal win over regional champion and 2024 state runner-up Adrianna Chronister from Stilwell. In the finals, Bearid used takedowns in each period to defeat West Regional champion Addison Adams from McLoud to claim the 140 lb. title and become Skiatook’s first state champion.

Prior to this year, Oologah had only one state placer, but added four state placers this year, including their first state champion, Abagail Lacy. Piper Morton is now a 2X state placer with her 3rd place finish and Jentri Burch placed 4th. Jaylee Sanders pinned defending state champion Aleah Chase from Marlow to advance to the finals, where fell to Little Axe’s Amelia Earhart to earn a runner-up finish. Lacy, just a freshman, won the 235 lb. title with three falls including a fall in 3:26 in the finals over returning state champion Chloe Vawter from Little Axe.

Bridge Creek, Salina and Madill also made history with wrestlers becoming the first state placers for each of those schools.
Bridge Creek junior Hannah Miller placed 3rd at 135 lbs. with a consolation finals fall over Little Axe’s Ainsley Jennings. Miller, a 4th place medalist for Harrah last year finished the year 36-7 and her final win put her in the 100 victory club as her career record now stands at 100-21.
Junior Macy Gorczynski goes in the record books as the first state placer for Salina with her 4th place finish at 140 lbs.
Madelyn Ritchie earned a 4th place medal at 190 lbs. to become Madill’s firs state placer and was joined in the very next match as teammate Anglena Mendiola placed 3rd at 235 lbs. Mendiloa won her 3rd place match with a fall over Tuttle’s Kurstynn Walker.
