Class 5A State Tournament Preview

Dual State and West Regional champion Elgin and East Regional champion Collinsville are the favorites heading into the Class 5A State Tournament, but unlike the other classes that only have 2-3 teams battling for the top spot, Class 5A has eight other schools studying the brackets to see how they can claim the 2023 state title. Collinsville won the East Regional Tournament, but only 13 points separated the top four teams. Pryor trailed Collinsville by two points with Coweta and Grove close behind. Elgin won the West Regional by 35 points over 2nd place Lawton Mac but El Reno, Duncan, Carl Albert and Guthrie all scored over 170 points and in the running for a state title.

Anyone who has attended a past State Tournament knows upsets WILL happen. The team title may come down to who avoids the upsets or who is able to pull off a couple of upsets and get a surprise finalist or placer. Also critical will be the all-important bonus points scored by the wrestlers…
