It took a while to get it in and even had to change the location of the Redskin Rumble Dual Tournament, but for the third year in a row, a powerful Broken Arrow team emerged as the team champion. The tournament was originally scheduled as a 16-team tournament on January 16-17 in McLoud, but as everyone knows, weather played havoc with the schedule. Finally rescheduled for February 4 at Harrah, 11 teams were able to make it and battled for the “unofficial” Girls Dual State championship.
Top ranked Broken Arrow, coached by Tori Liles, opened the tournament with a first round bye, then defeated Oologah 63-18, and advanced to the finals with a 75-6 win over Cache. As most expected, it was Broken Arrow and Bixby in the finals, with Broken Arrow winning nine matches by fall to win the title by a 54-27 score. In the finals, Broken Arrow got falls from Alina Peralta, Kristen DeLaRosa, Briley Bates, Kyah Leyba, Tiffany Breshears, Sophie Donaho, Emily Beckley, Sonora Reece, and Brooklyn McKinney to claim the title.
Bixby, coached by Jenna Burkert, advanced to the finals with a 51-24 win over Del City, a 63-18 win over Noble, and a 48-30 semifinal win over Westmoore. In the finals, Bixby got falls from Addison Morse, Gracie Cooper, and Millie Azlin, a tech fall from Ivy Mullin, and a major decision from Audrey Flores, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Broken Arrow.
Westmoore and McLoud advanced to the consolation finals, but based on a quarterfinal win by Westmoore, the coaches agreed not to wrestles again, giving Westmoore the 3rd place finish, with McLoud finishing 4th.
In the Westmoore-McLoud dual, Westmoore got falls from Kyrstan Perez, Hannah Lopez, Mikalea Pinley, Jazmyn Martinez, Ranelle Smith, and Jakoiya Medina, along with a major decision from Malia Tini, and forfeit wins by Jiselle Cardiel, and Brooklyn Vanhowten to post the victory. McLoud countered with falls from Gabriella Lozano, Alexus Jones, Kendra Perrien, and Riley Samarripa, and a major decision win by Remy Whitney.
In some interesting matchups in the Westmoore-McLoud dual, McLoud’s Remy Whitney avenged a loss in last year’s state finals with a 16-6 major decision win over Kyrain Perez. At 110 lbs., Westmoore 2023 state champion and 3X state placer, Hannah Lopez won by fall over state runner-up Yazmin Nevarez. State champions Kyrstan Perez and Carli Sisco met at 105 lbs., with Perez winning by fall.
Westmoore coached by Bryson McGowan, opened the tournament with a 69-9 win over Norman North, and beat McLoud 52-28 in the quarterfinals, before falling to Bixby in the semifinals. Westmoore defeated Del City 48-27 in the consolation semifinals.
McLoud, coached by Chad Whitney, had a first round bye, before falling to Westmoore in the quarterfinals. They bounced back from that loss with wins over Harrah (44-35), Noble (50-21), and Cache (56-24).
Following the tournament, Broken Arrow Coach Liles commented “The girls showed up and came ready to battle in every dual. The girls wrestle for each other every time and I think that’s why we are having the results we are having.”
This was the fifth year that McLoud hosted the tournament, but the first to include the Oklahoma Wrestling Coaches Association (OWCA) and the Air Force as sponsors. McLoud Coach and tournament director, William Winters was very appreciative of the efforts of OWCA President Zach Hale from Noble and Vice-President, Tom Johnston and the support from the Air Force. Coach Winters “The OWCA and Air Force stepped in big and it was awesome to see their support.”
Through the efforts of Johnston, the Air Force served as a sponsor of the tournament, paying for the trophies, officials, and other tournament expenses. Representative from the Air Force were at the tournament all day, running a recruiting table and supporting the tournament.
Coach Winters said McLoud is already working on next year’s tournament as they hope to grow to a 32-team tournament with eight pools of four teams. Winters stated “The goal is to make it look as much like the boys districts with the eight pool champions advancing to an eight team bracket just like the boys Dual State.”
