Big 12 Review: OU

Oklahoma – 4th Place (97.5 Points)

Despite coming in unranked as a tournament team, the Sooners came in and once again overperformed to finish in the top four for the third year in a row. They did that with a combination of upsets, wrestlers outperforming seeds, and of course bonus points. Nine Sooners made the podium, with only Carson Berryhill not placing. Not only that but they qualified eight wrestlers, outperforming expectations by three. Once again the Sooners finish the year strong, and will look to carry this momentum to NCAA’s.

125lbs: #29 Joey Prata – 4th Place (11.5 Team Points)

  • Champ. Round 1 – Joey Prata Dec. Tucker Owens (Dec 5-4)
  • Quarterfinal – Joey Prata Dec. #19 Jore Volk (SV-1 4-2)
  • Semifinal – #13 Noah Surtin Dec. Joey Prata (Dec 5-3)
  • Cons. Semi – Joey Prata Dec. Tucker Owens (Dec 3-1)
  • 3rd Place Match – #32 Reece Witcraft Dec. Joey Prata (SV-1 3-1)

I had Prata picked third and it went about how I expected, with Prata getting the big upset over two seed Jore Volk. Prata had to win tough matches against Owens twice as well, who is just outside of the rankings. Prata found more success with his scrambling and offense here, but came up just short against Surtin and Witcraft when he couldn’t score late. Prata didn’t score a ton of bonus points, but won gritty matches, outplaced his original seven seed, and will be headed to his third NCAA tournament because of it…
