The school has mandated all students and employees get the vaccine. Willie Saylor announced on his show Monday that Howe, and another assistant Jimmy Kennedy, have both decided not to get the vaccine and the university plans to fire them.

Howe was an NCAA finalist at OU in 2014 and went on to be an assistant for the Sooners for two years after graduation. He was hired by Northwestern in 2016 and promoted to the position of associate head coach in 2018.

This had some repercussions in recruiting for Northwestern as Stillwater’s Carter Young announced this week that he will be attending Oklahoma State. This is reportedly due to the firing of Howe and Kennedy.

According to Saylor, Howe and Kennedy are appealing the decision and that process still has some time to play out, which could ultimately could shift things a bit.

Update:

According to Willie, Howe has won his appeal and will remain on staff at Northwestern.
