The most important day of a long wrestling season arrives Saturday when No. 4-ranked Central Oklahoma travels to Warrensburg, Mo for the NCAA Division II Super Regional IV  Tournament.

First-round action begins at 10 a.m. at the Jerry Hughes Athletics Center on the Central Missouri campus and the 10-team tournament will run straight through, culminating in the placement matches at approximately 5 p.m.

The top-three finishers at each of the 10 weights qualify for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, which are set for March 14-15 in Indianapolis, Ind. Five other regional tournaments will also be held Saturday, with 30 qualifiers advancing from each of those to create the 180-wrestler national tournament field..

“This is the biggest day of the year,” ninth-year head Todd Steidley said. “You can’t do anything at the national tournament if you aren’t there, so the only goal for each of our guys this weekend is to qualify. It all comes down to how we perform on this one day and our main objective is moving everybody on to the national tournament.

“It’s been a long season and we’ve had to battle some injuries, but our guys have worked hard and they’re ready. I just want them to wrestle hard for seven minutes every time they step on the mat. We can’t be looking ahead and have to focus on one match at a time.”

The Bronchos are looking for their fifth straight regional title and the 24th since joining Division II in 1990. UCO crowned seven champions for the second straight year and qualified eight individuals last season in finishing with 160 points, just nine ahead of McKendree.

ABOUT THE REGIONAL: Five of the 10 teams are ranked in the top 25 – No. 4 UCO, No. 7 McKendree, No. 20 Maryville, No. 22 Central Missouri and No. 24 Indianapolis. Drury, Kentucky Wesleyan, Newman, Ouachita Baptist and Quincy round out the field.

“We’re in one of the toughest regionals,” Steidley said. “There are a lot of good individuals at each weight and we know it’s going to be a big challenge for us.”

There are 28 ranked individuals in the tournament and five returning champions — UCO’s 149 Dylan Brown, 157 Gabe Johnson, 165 Hunter Jump and 184 Garrett Wells along with Maryville Hvy Ryan Herman.
