Abney, Johnson named Academic All-Americans

MANHEIM, Pa. – Dalton Abney and Gabe Johnson enjoyed plenty of success on the mat in 2022-23, but the two Central Oklahoma wrestling standouts also shine in the classroom and have been named to the NWCA Division II Scholar All-America Team.

Abney rebounded from a mid-season injury to capture his second straight 197-pound national championship. An exercise/fitness management major from Tulsa, the junior finished 23-2 and won all four tournaments he competed in.

Johnson, a marketing major from Choctaw, went 33-7 this season and earned All-America honors with a seventh-place national tournament finish. The redshirt freshman placed in six tournaments, winning the Super Regional IV title.

Abney and Johnson helped lead the Bronchos to their 16th team national championship, including the first since 2007.

In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II Scholar All-American Team, he must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, with that benchmark at 3.25 for those who qualified for the 2023 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships and a 3.0 for those who were 2023 All-Americans.
