Defending state champion McLoud, turned in a powerful performance to win the Girls Class 5A West Regional Tournament held Monday and Tuesday in Weatherford. McLoud went a perfect 11 for 11 in the medal round, including crowing six regional champions, to score 273 points, with Cache finishing in 2nd with 169.5, and Little Axe placing 3rd with 168 points.
Winning titles for McLoud were Remy Whitney, Carli Sisco, Yazmin Nevarez, Gabby Lozano, Launa Troutt, and Alexus Jones, with Addison Adams, Kendra Perrien, Riley Samarippa, and Melanie Nenaikita all placing 3rd, and Jenica Mehtala adding a 5th place finish.
Three of the regional champions finished their careers as 4X regional champions. Prior to this year, only Ft. Gibson’s Peighton Mullins had won four regional titles. Joining this exclusive group were Dru Turner, Kylie Freeman, and Brook West. In their freshman year, with all schools still competing in one class, they each placed 3rd at the State Tournament and all three are 2X state champions.
The six champions from McLoud went a combined 23-0, with 22 falls in the tournament. Remy Whitney, a state runner-up in Class 6A last year, never went into the 2nd period to win the 100 lb. title. She had three falls in 2:20. Defending state champion Carli Sisco also recorded falls in all three of her matches to win the 105 lb. title. Yazmin Naevarez, a state runner-up last year, had falls in all four of her matches to win the 110 lb. title. Gabby Lozano won the 115 lb. title, going 4-0 with four falls.
Defending state champion Launa Troutt, back on the mat for the first time since early January, went 5-0, with four falls. In the finals she defeated state runner-up Liz McLeroy from Tuttle, by a 9-3 score. Alexus Jones, a 2024 state champion, who missed most of last season with an injury, won the 135 lb. title with four 1st period falls, wrestling a total time of 4:56.
Sulphur’s Jolee Thomas won the 125 lb. title with a fall in the finals over Clinton state champion, Baylor Moore. Thomas advanced to the finals with a fall and tech fall. 2X state champion, Dru Turner from Hinton won the 130 lb. title with four falls, including falls in 0:45, 0:25, and 0: 33. Caddo junior Gage Vaughn, a 2024 state champion and runner-up last year, won the 140 lb. title with three falls and a tech fall.
2X state champion Kylie Freeman from Tonkawa, kept her undefeated season going (24-0), winning the 145 lb. title with four falls. Anadarko junior Lyndi Cisco, already a 2X state champion, won the 155 lb. title with four 1st period falls. Morrison sophomore Ashlee Motes was another champion to record all 1st period falls, as she went 4-0 with four falls to win the 170 lb. title.
2X state champion Brook West had a fall and won by injury default, before winning the 190 lb. title with a 5-0 win over Sulphur’s Parker Winn. Little Axe junior Chloe Vawter, a 2024 state champion and runner-up last year won the 235 lb. title with falls in all three of her matches, including a fall in the finals over state placer Anglena Medniola from Madill.
The top five individuals at each weight qualify for next week’s State Tournament. McLoud qualified 11, with Cache qualifying eight and Little Axe qualifying five wrestlers.
