5A Boys Wrestling Preview

Going into the 2023 Class 5A State Tournament, there were at least eight teams with a shot at winning the state title.  Carl Albert, only a 5th place finisher at the Regional Tournament, put it all together to claim the 2023 State championship.  2024 looks to be the more of the same with a large number of teams in the early running to win the 2024 state championship.  Half of last year’s state placers graduated so teams will be looking for upcoming freshmen and those that just missed out on a state medal last year to help propel their team to the 2024 Class 5A state title.

There are nine returning or past state champions and leading the way is Collinsville’s 3X state champion Canon Acklin.  Other returning state champions are Kaiden Herendeen (Guthrie), Jarrett Patty (Chickasha), Toby Shipman (Coweta) Eli Ramirez (Duncan), Braden Brown (Lawton Mac), Jayden Moore (Tahlequah), and Ritson Meyer (Elgin).  Hudson Henslick (Collinsville) and Dylan Bratt (Chickasha) both won state titles in 2022.  Patty, Shipman and Meyer were freshmen as they took the first big step in becoming 4X state champions.

2023 Dual State champion Elgin appears to have the nod as the early favorite.  Elgin returns a very experienced team, led by state champion Ritson Meyer, 2X state placer and 2022 state runner-up Hunter Jackson, and 3rd place finishers Brice Martin and Colyn Donnelly….
