  • #3 Oklahoma State Cowboys face #6 Viriginia Tech in a dual on Sunday afternoon
  • Wide gap in talent between the two teams expected to reflect in the final score
  • Dual includes key matchups such as Troy Spratley vs. Eddie Ventresca at 125 and Jax Forrest vs. Aaron Seidel at 133
  • Predictions made for each weight class, with potential for upsets and close matches
  • Overall prediction favors Oklahoma State Cowboys to win the dual 23-9

The #3 Oklahoma State Cowboys (13-1) hit the road for a Sunday afternoon showdown against #6 Viriginia Tech (10-2). The dual starts at 1 pm. CST and will be broadcast on the ACC Network/ESPN+. While the team’s rankings are fairly close, there is a wide gap in talent and this is unlikely to be very close score at the end of the dual, unless the Hokies can pull off some major upsets.  The real story of the dual will be the will he or won’t he redshirt saga of Jax Forrest, and this dual may tell us a bit more about the world champ’s postseason plans.

Virginia Tech’s two losses were both to Minnesota in back-to-back days at the National Dual Invitational, by scores of 19-17 and 25-10. Since then they have run off six straight wins, however against much lesser competition. This dual will easily be the toughest of the year for Va Tech and will be a nice warm up for the Pokes for next Sunday’s main dish at home vs. Iowa.

Let’s get to the lineup and predictions. Rankings (Flo/Intermat).

125 (7/7) Troy Spratley (11-2) vs. (2/3) Eddie Ventresca (16-2)

The dual starts off with a bang with two guys that each have a chance to make the finals at Nationals. Ventresca has finished 5th and 7th at NCAA’s in previous years, to Spratley’s 2nd and bloodround exit. Ventresca’s two losses are both to (12/14) Jore Volk (Minnesota) way back in November and he has run off 12 straight wins since, including recent wins over (5/5) Vincent Robinson (NC State) and (10/10) Nico Provo (Stanford). Spratley, too, has been on a tear, winning nine straight, with his last loss in November to (6/6) Dean Peterson (Iowa). They have wrestled each other twice; both Spratley wins (MD and OT). Against common opponents, Sprat is 25-14 to Eddie’s 26-12, showing how close these guys are. This is a coin flip match, so I’m going to reluctantly predict Ventresca, only because they are wrestling in Blacksburg.

PREDICTION: Ventresca in OT. Va Tech 3-0.

133 (10/10) Jax Forrest (7-0) or Ronnie Ramirez (7-3) vs. (6/6) Aaron Seidel (12-0)

Coach David Taylor has played it coy for weeks regarding the status of Jax Forrest and whether he is going to finish the year. There are rumors of him skipping this dual and going to an open to get matches, as well as wrestling this date to potentially get a big win.
