What to watch for: OU vs NDSU

#30 Oklahoma (8-6) vs #13 North Dakota State (10-2)

After a 1-1 weekend, OU is still looking to get a signature win as a team. They could have a chance to pull off a big upset here against a conference opponent. NDSU is the 4th ranked Big 12 dual team, but their top 15 ranking shows the depth of the conference. While multiple things would have to go right here, I think the Sooners match up well with NDSU as a team. Here are some things to look out for if they want to pull off the big upset.

Limit bonus points

NDSU has some dangerous wrestlers who are more than capable of putting up four points or more for the team. Jared Franek has a relentless offense that can be hard to defend, I think he pushes for the major. Same with Caliendo, who can wear opponents down before pulling away in the third period.

DJ Parker at 184 is one of the best from the top position with tilts that can quickly add up. If Moore ends up on bottom he won’t want to stay there long. At 197 Pentz is probably the best pinner at the weight class, with seven on the year already. If the Sooners want to win, they’ll need to limit these to decisions or majors at best and not give up six points.

Where can OU separate?

An issue for the Sooners has been their inability to separate and score bonus points of their own, which makes it hard in dual meets. They have a chance in the first three matches though. Prata only has two bonus point wins this year, but if he can pull one out here that would be big for the team. Henson’s aggressive style can wear opponents down, as long as he doesn’t wear himself out.
