Sam Smith provides crucial upset to propel Stillwater over Broken Arrow.

The eyes of much of the wrestling world were focused on the mat in the center of the Broken Arrow gym on Tuesday night as two of the top 6A programs this year went at it in one of the first major duals of the year.

The dual opened with a bang as Sam Smith took on OU commit Christian Forbes. In a match where most would pencil in Forbes as a solid favorite, Smith pulled off the upset. Forbes picked up the first takedown then the pair exchanged some back-and-forth scoring until Forbes tied things up at six with thirty-seven seconds left in the match. Smith scored a quick escape and got a takedown with 15 seconds left. He took the match 9-7

Broken Arrow responded with a 6-1 win from Kaleb Colins at 113 then Stillwater’s heavy hitters went 6-1 in their seven matches from 120-160, only losing at 132. This stretched the lead for the Pioneers to 27-6 heading into 170. 

On paper, the matches from 170-HWT, either favored Broken Arrow or would be considered by most to be toss-ups. At 170, Dax Hughes put together a solid 5-0 win over Dayton Hill to put Stillwater up 30-6. Broken Arrow still could have mathematically tied the dual at this point if they would have pinned out from 182 on, but a late takedown for Gatlin Wilson against Ramses Soto put Stillwater up 33-6 and locked down the dual for the Pioneers.
