OU Picks up Transfer From NCAA Qualifier Joe Grello

The transfer market continues to be a favorable one for the Sooners as OU has picked up their third impact offseason transfer with Rutgers Joe Grello.

Grello announced via his Instagram that he’ll be transferring to OU from Rutgers.

Grello, who was an NCAA qualifier at Rutgers, went 10-5 last season at 174, but according to his Instagram post will be making the cut to 165.

OU juggled their lineup a bit at 165 before settling on Troy Mantanona, who had a breakout finish to his season and was a major catalyst for the Sooners Big 12 title. Mantanona was technically a sophomore last season, but has a redshirt available to use next year. If Grello is able to make the cut to 165 successfully, one would assume Mantanona would redshirt next season making Grello, who has one year of eligibility remaining, an ideal fit to allow Mantanona to redshirt and step back into that starting role.

Grello was a two year postseason starter at Rutgers, an NCAA qualifier, and a three-time Academic All Big Ten selection.

This is the third major transfer for OU this season, along with NCAA qualifier and ACC Champion Joey Prata, who will likely be the starter at 125 for OU next season. This transfers are significant and could help keep OU in the Big 12 title conversation again for the 2021-2022 season.
