Oklahoma 5A State Wrestling Recap

Pushing four into finals and crowing one champion (Alex Sutterfield), Carl Albert shocked most with an incredible State Tournament performance to win the Class 5A State tournament by 16 points over 2nd place Collinsville which crowned two champions (Canon Acklin and Cole Brooks). Behind champion Ritson Meyer, Elgin finished in 3rd place, followed by El Reno (champions Dailey Jennings and Will Heger) and Guthrie (champions Kaiden Herendeen and Braden Hall).

Going into the tournament, there were eight teams that had a chance to win the state championship. While all of the other teams took turns knocking each other out of the tournament, Carl Albert, which finished 5th at the regional tournament, stayed strong, moving all seven wrestlers into Saturday’s action and ended up with six medalist to win their first state championship since 1992. Winning the state title from the 5th place regional finish is the largest comeback in Oklahoma wrestling history (previous record John Marshall won the 1968 state championship after a 4th place regional finish).

Medalists for Carl Albert included champion Alex Sutterfield, 2nd place medalists Kasen Miller, Grant Gober, and Isaiah Matanane, 3rd placed medalist Raylyn Sherman and 4th place finisher Nathan Sutterfield…
