SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Nov. 10) – A quartet of bonus-point routs powered No. 4-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 30-9 romp over Drury Thursday night at Weiser Gym.
Anthony DesVigne scored a first-period fall at 184 pounds, while 133 Dylan Lucas, 149 Brik Filippo and 197 Dalton Abney had technical falls as the Bronchos won their 21st straight dual. UCO moved closer to its 600th win, improving to 598-251-11.
Central also got wins from 125 Studd Morris, 157 Gabe Johnson and Hvy Braden Morgan in improving to 2-0 on the young season. The Bronchos will send a contingent of individuals to Poteau, Okla. Saturday for the Viking Open.
“We looked pretty good in some places and not so good in others,” said head coach Todd Steidley, who picked up his 75th win (75-11) in his seventh year at the helm. “There’s a lot of things we need to work on and clean up, but I thought we wrestled hard.”
DesVigne improved to 7-0 with a first-period pin as the junior had a pair of quick takedowns before getting the fall just 1:03 into the match.
D. Lucas continued his dominating early-season start with a 15-0 technical fall, racking up four near-falls and two takedowns in ending the match early in the second period. The sophomore newcomer is now 6-0 with six bonus-point wins.
Filippo polished off an 18-2 rout midway through the third period. The third-ranked senior had five takedowns and two near-falls on the night.
Abney also had a short night, piling up four takedowns and two near-falls in a 17-2 drubbing that ended 16 seconds into the second period. It was the 28th consecutive win for the defending national champion and top-ranked junior star.
Morris got the Bronchos off to a good start with a methodical 8-2 victory in the opening match, scoring two takedowns and a two-point near-fall.
Johnson prevailed 4-2 behind a first-period takedown and Morgan snapped a 1-1 third-period tie with a pair of final-minute takedowns in winning 5-2.
The 11th-ranked Keim dropped a tough 7-6 decision to long-time nemesis and No. 4 Peter Kuster at 141. Keim went up 6-3 early in the second period with his second reverse of the match, but Kuster escaped and got a last-second takedown to pull within 6-5.
Kuster took neutral in the final stanza and struck for the go-ahead takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining, then tacked on a riding time point.
T. Lucas led 3-1 entering the final period before giving up two takedowns in falling 5-4 to Will Kuster at 165. Barrett Haemker filled in for injured starter Hunter Jump and dropped an 8-5 decision at 174 for UCO’s other loss.
